Described by Chekhov as a "comedy in four acts," The Cherry Orchard is the story of how an eccentric aristocrat and her friends try to sort out her debts so that she isn't forced to sell her beloved cherry orchard, but there's just one problem: she doesn't understand the value of money at all.
Chekhov deftly draws a portrait of a society in turmoil amidst social change, with the children of serfs making a better life than their forebears and an aristocracy in decline, whether they choose to accept it or not.
